About the book
THE SHADOW WIFE Love has a darker side. In the picture-perfect town of Blackwood, 1954, Evelyn Miller teaches literature by day and performs the role of the ideal wife by night. Her house is immaculate. Her marriage is silent. Her husband, David, works himself to exhaustion trying to save a failing hardware store and a dream of Italy he can no longer afford to share. When a striking, enigmatic younger man named Julian appears in the library stacks, he sees what no one else does: the hollow space growing inside her. He speaks the truths she has never dared voice. He appears exactly when the emptiness becomes unbearable. Then the blackouts begin. Hours vanish. Mud appears on her shoes. Pine needles cling to her clothes. And Julian is always waiting in the dark, whispering that the house will still be empty when she returns. As the line between comfort and control, memory and invention, begins to dissolve, Evelyn discovers that the most dangerous thing in a perfect marriage is not the silence—it is the moment the silence starts answering back. A psychological thriller of desire, repression, and the shadows we create when love is no longer enough.
Synopsis
THE SHADOW WIFE by Tyrex Black In the quiet perfection of 1950s Blackwood, Evelyn Miller lives the life every woman is supposed to want. She teaches literature at the local high school, keeps an immaculate home, and smiles through dinners that taste of ash. Her husband works long hours trying to hold their world together. From the outside, nothing is broken. Inside the carefully ordered rooms, something else is growing. When a striking stranger appears in the library stacks and speaks the truths Evelyn has never dared say aloud, the silence she has lived with for years begins to answer back. Small cracks appear in the carefully maintained surface of her days. Hours vanish. The house no longer feels empty in the same way. And the distance between the woman she is expected to be and the woman she is becoming grows harder to ignore. Set against the polished lawns and quiet streets of a town that prizes appearances above all else, The Shadow Wife is a psychological story of longing, repression, and the dangerous things the mind can invent when love is no longer enough.

I really enjoyed the opening of The Shadow Wife. It has such an atmospheric, unsettling feel and I loved the 1950s setting! Evelyn immediately caught my attention, she seems so composed on the outside but you can feel that something underneath is slowly starting to unravel. I especially loved the way her marriage to David was portrayed, with the small details saying so much without everything being spelled out. The Jekyll and Hyde opening was such a clever touch too! There’s definitely a feeling that something darker is coming and I’m really curious to see where Evelyn’s story and the mysterious blackouts lead.

Just finished the ARC for The Shadow Wife and I'm hooked. The slow burn actually works, by the time Julian shows up you completely understand why Evelyn falls for the mystery of him, and that ending beat (him repeating something she never said out loud) gave me chills. Beautifully controlled writing, great sense of place. Can't wait to see where this goes. Highly recommend.
